Mixed switches, also known as hybrid or combination switches, are exactly what the name suggests: multiple different switches in one box. That means they can have a toggle switch and a dimmer switch together on the same plate, or even an outlet!
In fact, we offer all the combinations you could imagine for up to five different utilities.
Let's dive straight into the world of mixed switches and see how you can incorporate them into your home's aesthetic.
What exactly are mixed switches?
Mixed switches are electrical components that connect to your house's power supply and can control the lights, electrical appliances, or anything else that requires electricity and a switch.
What makes them different from normal switches is that you can control multiple fixtures or appliances from the same location. However, that doesn't mean that one switch controls multiple fixtures, as each fixture still has its own switch.
Granted, you can definitely control multiple fixtures using one switch as long as the wattage of the combined lights is lower than the wattage that the switch can hold. You can find this information under each of our products, but in general, our switches can hold up to 1800 W.
So mixed switches can for example be three toggle switches in a row followed by a dimmer switch, or two switches and one outlet, and so on.
Where should I install mixed switches?
Mixed switches are best placed in the entrances of rooms that have multiple light fixtures, such as the living room. You might want to control both your recessed can lights and a chandelier from the same place.
However, we offer a lot more flexibility with our mixed switch + outlet options. These can be installed wherever you need extra room for electrical appliances, such as outside the bathroom.
The possibilities are endless so don't stick too much to these examples. Depending on your home's layout and your personal preferences, you might need to install mixed switches in an obscure place in the kitchen or by the bed!
Just think of your lighting needs and convenience before you make a purchase.
And keep in mind that our customizable mixed switches can come in all combinations of toggle, dimmer, and outlet!
How to replace a combination switch
Our switches fit the standard electrical boxes that are rated for each use. For example, our 4-gang toggle + dimmers mixed switch fits a standard 4-gang US electrical box.
Before doing any electrical work, switch off the power for the light switch you are replacing. This is a very important step to avoid getting hit by electricity so do not skip it. Always consult a licensed electrician if you are uncertain of the work you're performing!
Remove the Old Switch
- Unscrew the wall plate covering the old switch.
- Remove the screws holding the old switch to the electrical box.
- Take note of which wires are connected to which terminals on the old switch. Label them if necessary.
- Disconnect the wires.
Prepare the Wires
- If the ends of the wires are damaged or have too much insulation, use a wire stripper to strip about half an inch of insulation from the ends.
- Many modern dimmer switches require a neutral wire (usually white). Ensure there is a neutral wire in the box. If there isnβt, you might need a different type of switch or additional wiring.
Connect the New Switch
- Attach the green or bare copper ground wire from the switch to the ground wire in the electrical box. Secure with a wire nut and wrap with electrical tape.
- Connect the load wire (usually black or red) from the switch to the wire that goes to the light fixture.
- Connect the line wire (usually black) from the switch to the wire that comes from the circuit breaker.
- If required, connect the neutral wire (usually white) from the switch to the neutral wire in the box.
- If the switch has an additional wire for the dimmer function, connect it as instructed by the switch manufacturer.
Mount the Switch
- Carefully tuck the wires back into the electrical box.
- Screw the new switch into the electrical box.
- Screw on the wall plate.
Test the Switch
- Turn the circuit breaker back on.
- Turn the light on and off using the toggle switch and adjust the brightness using the dimmer control to ensure everything works properly.
You're all set! Enjoy our new multi-functional switches and light up your home like never before!
