Although some consider them outdated, chandeliers can be an amazing addition to your interior lighting design. In this article, we will focus on mid-century modern chandeliers, which are some of the most popular out there.
Let's start with a brief introduction to the mid-century modern style and then we'll see some products and some tips and tricks, as well as how to install your new chandelier.
What is the mid-century modern style?
The mid-century modern style is a design movement that emerged in the mid-20th century, primarily during the 1940s through the 1960s. It is characterized by clean lines, organic shapes, and a focus on functionality without sacrificing beauty. The style is rooted in minimalism and simplicity, but it embraces bold designs that make a statement through form and material.
Key features of the mid-century modern style include:
- Simplicity and clean lines: Furniture and architectural elements feature simple, straight lines or gently curved forms, often with minimal ornamentation.
- Organic and geometric forms: The style blends nature-inspired organic shapes with more rigid geometric forms, creating a harmonious balance between the two.
- Use of natural materials: Wood, leather, and natural fibers are commonly used in mid-century modern design, often combined with man-made materials like glass, plastic, and metal for a balanced look.
- Bold colors and contrasts: While the base palette often remains neutral, the style incorporates vibrant accent colors, such as mustard yellow, teal, and burnt orange, to create visual interest.
- Functional design: Every piece, from furniture to lighting, is designed with functionality in mind, emphasizing practicality alongside aesthetic appeal.
- Integration with nature: Large windows, open spaces, and the use of natural light are central to the mid-century modern ethos, blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors.
This timeless design style remains popular today for its sleek, uncluttered look and its ability to blend with a variety of other design styles, from modern to eclectic.
Why chandeliers are an essential lighting feature in interior design
Chandeliers are an all-time classic, taking care of your ambient light needs in a fashionable and bold manner. They are best used in large spaces and over dining tables, especially when there is a need to create a focal point in the room.
A chandelier immediately draws attention and becomes the centerpiece of a room. Its intricate design and placement often serve as a conversation starter and can set the tone for the entire space.
Furthermore, if you've followed our blog for a while, you know how much emphasis we place on layering.
In interior design, layering is the use of different types of fixtures to serve different purposes - chandeliers play a vital role in this. They provide ambient, or general lighting, which forms the base layer of light in a room. This ensures that the space is evenly lit while other sources like task lighting or accent lighting can be added for specific purposes or to highlight certain architectural features.
Finally, the versatility of chandeliers makes them one of the best options you have for ambient light. A chandelier hung in the right spot can make a small room feel more open, or a large room feel more intimate and inviting. The reflection and diffusion of light from chandeliers, especially those with crystal or glass elements, can create a sense of airiness and space.
Chandeliers come in a wide range of styles, materials, and sizes, making them suitable for any design aesthetic - from opulent crystal chandeliers in traditional homes to sleek, geometric designs in contemporary spaces. This versatility allows you to find the perfect chandelier to complement your decor.
How to choose the perfect chandelier
Here are some design tips and tricks that will help you choose the perfect chandelier for your space.
1. Room size matters
Match the chandelier size to the room. Add the room's length and width in feet to get the ideal chandelier diameter in inches!
2. Match materials and finishes
Select materials and finishes that complement your room’s furniture and other fixtures. More contemporary architectures fit best with metal mid-century modern chandeliers, while more traditional styles work best with earthly materials.
3. Balance style and function
Ensure your chandelier provides enough light or combine it with other lighting options. Glass chandeliers typically diffuse light more. Pay attention to where your chandelier focuses the light, and complement it with other fixtures to not leave any dark corners.
4. Shape for space
Choose a chandelier shape that suits the room layout, like linear for long tables or round for entryways.
5. Opt for dimmability
Dimmable chandeliers offer flexibility for different lighting needs and moods. We always suggest placing as many of your lights as you can on dimmers!
Where to place the chandelier
For the ideal placement, visit our collection page and read the text at the bottom. There, we discuss in detail exactly where and how to place your new chandelier.
However, as a general rule, place the chandelier 30-36 inches above dining tables or 7-8 feet from the floor in other areas.
How to install a mid-century modern chandelier
Please always consider hiring a professional electrician to ensure a safe installation, especially if you're unsure about electrical work. Also, ensure your ceiling box can support the weight of the chandelier.
Tools and materials needed
- Screwdriver (flat-head and Phillips)
- Wire cutters/strippers
- Voltage tester
- Ladder
- Pliers
- Mid-century modern chandelier
- Mounting bracket (usually included with the chandelier)
- Wire nuts (typically included)
- Electrical tape
1. Turn off power
Locate your home’s electrical panel and turn off the power to the circuit where you’ll be installing the chandelier. This is crucial for your safety. Use a voltage tester to ensure there is no electricity running to the existing light fixture.
2. Remove the old fixture
If you are replacing an existing light fixture, carefully remove it by unscrewing the mounting screws and disconnecting the wires. Ensure that the existing wiring (black, white, and ground) remains intact and accessible for the new chandelier.
3. Assemble the chandelier
Some chandeliers require assembly before installation. Carefully follow the instructions for assembling any components.
4. Install the mounting bracket
Use screws to secure the mounting bracket that comes with the chandelier to the electrical box in the ceiling. Ensure it is securely attached, as it will support the weight of the chandelier.
5. Connect the wires
Strip about half an inch of insulation from the ends of the chandelier wires if they aren’t pre-stripped. Connect the wires from the chandelier to the existing wires in the ceiling:
- Black (live) to black (live)
- White (neutral) to white (neutral)
- Green or bare copper (ground) to ground wire or the green screw on the mounting bracket.
Use wire nuts to twist the wires together securely. Wrap the connections with electrical tape for added safety.
6. Hang the chandelier
Carefully lift the chandelier and hang it on the mounting bracket. Ensure it is securely fastened according to the instructions. If the chandelier has adjustable arms or pendants, take this opportunity to adjust them for the desired look.
7. Install light bulbs
Depending on your chandelier design, install the appropriate light bulbs. Ensure you’re using the correct wattage as specified on the product.
8. Restore power and test
Head back to your electrical panel and restore power to the circuit. Switch on the light to test your installation. Check for any flickering or issues.
If everything is working correctly, you’ve successfully installed your mid-century modern chandelier!
