Switches are a crucial component of electrical circuits. Flipping a switch either completes or breaks the circuit. It either connects or disconnects the flow of electrical current to turn on or off the devices or light fixtures. It is the primary function of all the electric switches.

Let’s learn about the three most common switch types.

1. Single-Pole Light Switch

A single-pole switch is one of the most common types of wall switches used in residential electrical. You can use these light switches to control a single light fixture or device from one location. They are also known as the “workhorse” of switches.

Features of single-pole switches

  • These electric switch types feature two brass terminal screws connected to the hot wires.

  • Some single-pole switches have a ground terminal to connect the circuit’s ground wire.

  • Single-pole toggle switches have “on and off” markings on them.

  • They either connect or disconnect the circuit path to turn the lights on or off.

  • When you flip the switch to the "ON" position, it enables the flow of electricity into the light fixture to turn it on.

  • Switching it to the "OFF" position stops the electricity from reaching the light fixture and turns it off.

  • They have a power capacity of 15–20 amps.

Uses of single-pole switches

  • Residential lights and fans

  • Low-power appliances

  • Small closet lighting

  • Bathroom lights

2. Double-Pole Light Switch

A double-pole or DP switch can control devices or light fixtures from one location. It usually manages devices that require a larger electrical load. Although mainly used in industrial settings, these types of switches can be found in residential electrical systems.

Features of double-pole switches

  • They feature four hot brass terminals and a ground terminal.

  • Like single-pole switches, they also have ON and OFF markings.

  • They can control two devices requiring a 240-volt power supply from a single location.

  • Switching it to the “ON” position completes both circuits and allows electricity to flow through it. Thus, it powers the connected device.

  • Switching it to the “OFF” position interrupts both circuits and cuts off the flow of electricity. It results in turning off the connected device.

  • They have a power capacity of 30 - 40 amps.

Uses of double-pole switches

  • Heavy machinery

  • Motors

  • Appliances like water heaters and air conditioners that require 240VAC

3. Three-Way Switch

A three-way switch lets you control one light or device from multiple locations. You can use them in pairs. So, you can control the light in two different entryways or rooms. These types of switches are also known as hallway or multi-way switches.

Features of three-way switches

  • These modern electric switches feature three terminal screws and a green grounding screw.

  • The top terminal connects to any one of the bottom two terminals.

  • They do not have any ON and OFF markings.

  • They are larger than single-pole switches.

Uses of three-way switches

  • At the top and bottom of a staircase.

  • Garages with two entryways.

  • Large rooms with more than one entry point.

Other Electric Switch Types

  • Dimmer Switch - With Dimmer switches, you can control the brightness of LED lights.

  • Smart Wall Switches - You can use them to control appliances via a smartphone app or remote control.

  • Motion Sensor Light Switches - They can turn on the lights by detecting the motion in an area.

  • Timer Switches - You can use them to turn on appliances or lights at a specific time.

  • Push Button Switches - They feature a button to press to turn the lights on.
