How Do You Replace an Old Light Switch? - Residence Supply

An old light switch replacement is a crucial task. However, you can easily maintain your home’s electrical system by understanding old light switch wiring and replacement methods. In this blog, you’ll learn how to replace an old light switch in easy steps.

Old Light Switch Replacement Method

Before you start wiring an old light switch, you must turn off the power to the switch at the circuit breaker. Then, use a voltage tester to confirm that the circuit is de-energized.

In this section, you’ll explore the steps of wiring a single-way light switch, an old light switch with 2 wires, and a 3-way old light switch wiring.

1. How to Wire a Single-Way Light Switch?

A single old light switch wiring is not that difficult.

I. Remove the Old Switch

  • Unscrew and remove the switch plate cover.

  • Unscrew the mounting screws holding the switch to the electrical box.

  • Carefully pull the switch out to see the wiring.

II. Disconnect the Wires

  • Check the configuration of the wires connected to the old switch.

  • A single-pole switch has two wires connected to it, which are usually black (hot) wires.

  • Loosen the terminal screws and disconnect the wires.

III. Connect the New Switch

  • Attach the existing wires to the corresponding terminals on the new switch.

  • Tighten the terminal screws to secure the connections.

IV. Reassemble

  • Carefully push the switch back into the electrical box.

  • Put the mounting screws back.

  • Replace the switch plate cover.

V. Restore Power

  • Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker.

  • Test the new switch to ensure it's working properly.

2. How Do You Replace an Old Light Switch with 2 Wires?

Many older homes have light switches with only two wires. These are a black (hot) wire and a white (neutral) or bare copper (ground) wire. Replacing these switches is similar to replacing a standard single-pole switch.

I. Remove the Old Switch

  • Unscrew and pull out the switch from the wall box.

  • If you see only two wires, one is the hot wire, and the other is either neutral or ground.

II. Disconnect the Wires

  • Loosen the terminal screws.

  • Remove the wires from the old switch.

III. Connect the New Switch

  • If your new switch has a ground screw and there is no ground wire present, you can leave it unconnected (check local electrical codes to be sure).

  • Attach the two wires to the new switch. (If the old switch had no ground wire, the new switch would still function without it.)

IV. Reassemble and Test

  • Carefully push the wires back into the wall box and fasten the switch with screws.

  • Replace the switch cover plate.

  • Restore power at the breaker and test the switch to make sure it’s working fine.

How to Wire a Three-Way Light Switch

A three-way light switch allows you to control a single light fixture from two different locations. These old push-button light switches or toggle switches are usually used in hallways or staircases. You need to be very careful when replacing or installing a 3-way switch.

I. Remove Old Switch

  • Locate both switches that control the light fixture.

  • Unscrew and pull out both switches from their electrical boxes.

II. Disconnect the Wires

  • A three-way switch setup involves two traveler wires and one common wire.

  • The common wire is usually connected to a darker-colored screw on the switch.

  • You can label the wires or take a photo for reference before disconnecting them.

  • Carefully disconnect the wires from the old switches.

III. Connect New Switches

  • Connect the ground wire to the green screw on the new switch.

  • Attach the common wire to the screw labeled "common" or the darker-colored screw.

  • Connect the two traveler wires to the remaining screws.

IV. Reassemble and Test

  • Place the new switches back into their electrical boxes and tighten the screws.

  • Attach the switch plate covers.

  • Turn the circuit breaker back on and test both switches to make sure both are working fine.

Final Thought

Replacing an old light switch is an easy DIY task. You can do it yourself only if you’re confident about wiring an old light switch. Otherwise, you can get professional help.  You may have outdated push-button light switches in your house. In that case, you need to check if your electrical system supports a direct replacement or requires additional wiring work.
