Sandable Flooring
Sandable flooring has enough veneer thickness to be professionally sanded and refinished one or more times over its life. Sanding restores the original surface, removes scratches and wear, and allows a finish or color change without replacing the floor. For homeowners and designers thinking about long-term value — forever homes, designer-specified residences, and boutique commercial — sandable engineered hardwood remains the highest-value flooring category in the program.
The Four Sandable Collections
- The Aurelia Collection. 4mm sawn European Oak veneer, supports two to three professional sandings.
- The Hudson Collection — American Black Walnut. 4mm Premium veneer, supports two to three professional sandings.
- The Hudson Collection — American Hickory. 3mm Light Rustic veneer, supports one to two careful sandings.
- The Belmont Collection. 6mm sawn European Oak veneer, supports approximately three professional sandings — the most in the program.
Why Sierra and Westvale Aren't Sandable
The Sierra Collection has a 1mm veneer and the Westvale Collection has a 2mm veneer. A reputable sanding contractor needs at least 4mm of veneer to commit to a full sanding. Both collections support screen-and-recoat refresh instead.
Sanding in Real Practice
In practice, very few Florida homeowners ever sand their floors. The cost and disruption are significant: a typical full-home sanding takes 3 to 5 days, the home must be unoccupied due to dust and finish fumes, and the per-square-foot cost is several dollars plus any color or finish change.
What Sanding Enables
The genuine value of a thicker veneer is reassurance and optionality. Sanding removes original stain entirely, allowing a complete color change — a powerful tool if a future owner wants to update the floor's appearance without replacement.
Screen-and-Recoat as the Alternative
Screen-and-recoat works on every collection in the program. The floor is lightly screened with a fine abrasive, then a fresh urethane finish coat is applied. The wood veneer is untouched.
Warranty Implications
Standard professional sanding does not void manufacturer warranties on sandable engineered hardwood. Belmont's 6mm veneer especially supports multiple sanding cycles across the floor's life.
