For accent lighting, downlights can be used as wall washers and to highlight architectural features, artwork, or other focal points in a room. They can be angled to create dramatic effects, drawing attention to specific areas or objects.
Outdoor downlights
Downlights are also great for outdoor settings, such as under eaves, in soffits, or above doorways, providing focused lighting for improved safety without overwhelming the area with too much light.
They can also be placed above garage entrances to provide clear visibility, especially in areas with steps or uneven terrain.
How to install downlights
- Switch off the circuit breaker for the area where you'll be working.
- Use a template to mark the spots on the ceiling where the downlights will be installed.
- Use a hole saw or drywall saw to cut the marked holes.
- Feed electrical wiring from the power source to the holes. Use a fish tape if necessary to guide the wires.
- Strip the wire ends and connect them to the downlight’s wiring—black to black (live), white to white (neutral), and green/bare to green (ground).
- Push the downlight housing into the ceiling hole. The spring clips should hold it securely in place.
- Insert the appropriate LED or other light bulbs into the downlight.
- Switch the circuit breaker back on and test the downlights to ensure they work correctly.
