Used for both ambient and task lighting, LED pendant lights present a versatile and classy option suitable for most spaces. In this guide, we will see how to choose the perfect pendants for your home to complement the rest of your design and illuminate your space in a balanced way.
Let's start with the basics.
What are LED pendant lights?
LED pendant lights are hanging light fixtures that use energy-efficient LED bulbs. They are typically suspended from the ceiling by a rod, chain, or cord, and they provide both ambient and task lighting, making them ideal for a variety of spaces like kitchens, dining rooms, or entryways.
LED pendant lights come in a wide range of styles and designs, from modern and minimalist to more traditional looks, allowing you to match them with your home’s decor. They’re also long-lasting and eco-friendly, offering bright illumination while consuming less energy than their counterparts (incandescent or fluorescent bulbs).
How to place LED pendant lights
The proper placement of pendants depends on the height of your ceiling and the area you want to install them. Here are some general guidelines:
- Above a kitchen island or dining table: Hang pendant lights 30-36 inches (75-90 cm) above the surface. This ensures they provide enough light while not obstructing views.
- In an open room: Install pendant lights so the bottom is about 72-84 inches (180-215 cm) above the floor. This allows clearance for walking without bumping into them.
- Entryways or stairwells: The pendant light should hang high enough, typically 7-8 feet (2.13-2.45 m) from the floor, especially in high-ceiling areas.
Adjust based on your ceiling height and room's proportions for the best look.
For multiple pendants in a row, keep a distance of about 30 inches (75 cm) between the edges of the pendants (not the bulbs) while spaced evenly. For example, a 7-foot kitchen island (215 cm) needs pretty much 3 pendants starting about 12-15 inches (30-38 cm) from the edges of the island and spaced 30 inches apart.
Best LED pendant lights
Now that we have seen what pendant lights are and where to place them, let's see some of our favorite pieces for your home.
For the kitchen island
Pendants in the kitchen have two main spots where they can be hung - multiple pendants in a row above the kitchen island/table or a single pendant over the kitchen sink.
For multiple pendants, we suggest checking out our wide selection here. However, let's see some of our favorite options:
This pendant is a classy and elegant light that fits all spaces from traditional to contemporary and rustic. It is ideal for kitchen islands because you won't need to hang multiple pendants - the Rangeen pendant acts as a multi-light pendant.
It comes with 32 W, 90-260 V integrated LEDs for even and bright lighting and produces 100 lumens per watt (non-dimmable). Check out our thorough guide to kitchen island lighting here to determine how many lumens you need and exactly how to place your new pendants!
The Macaron pendants are one of our more playful options that fit very well in colorful kitchens of more contemporary architecture. They come in a huge variety of colors and sizes so feel free to experiment and play around with all the potential combinations!
Also ideal for kitchen islands, the Soraya pendant is a very classy and modern choice that fits more Scandinavian-style architectures. Do choose this pendant if you're a fan of minimalism and good design.
Over the kitchen sink
Over the kitchen sink, you need targeted and focused light that is not blinding at the same time.
The Laetus pendant is a very elegant and simple choice that fits all architectures from traditional to contemporary. However, it is ideal in modern spaces with earthly colors and materials.
Another good option for over the kitchen sink is the Uri pendant.
The Uri pendant reflects light off of its surface and directs it downwards, making it ideal for use in areas where focused light is needed. The dynamic and slick design of the pendant light is supported by a wire with a steel disc to which the lampshade is magnetically linked. In this manner, you can experiment with the illumination by moving the lampshade to various positions of the lampshade.
For entryways and staircases
For entryways, you typically need larger pendants that diffuse light more, making them ideal for ambient light.
The Balance Rattan pendant fits best beach house style and more traditional architectures. Use it with earthly materials like wood or stone and colors such as brown, gray, and green.
This pendant also fits nicely with other light sources, such as recessed can lights or a statement chandelier.
The Drop pendant is ideal for round staircases, as it "drops" in the middle just like in the picture shown above. It comes in multiple options, including linear and round variants for multiple pendants.
This pendant can also fit entryways or corridors, providing ample light for everyday use.
