FAQ

Questions, Answered.

What does 'slab-compatible' mean?

Slab-compatible flooring is engineered to install directly over a concrete slab subfloor, which is what nearly every Florida home and most commercial spaces in our region are built on. This requires dimensional stability that solid hardwood cannot provide.

Why can't solid hardwood go over concrete?

Solid hardwood is one piece of wood from top to bottom. It moves uniformly with humidity, which is fine in cooler, drier regions but unreliable over concrete slabs in subtropical climates. The floor will crown (peak at seams) or cup (dip at seams) within months.

How does engineered construction solve the slab problem?

Engineered hardwood has a real wood veneer bonded to a multi-layer cross-grain core. Each layer of the core runs perpendicular to the one above, which keeps the plank dimensionally stable through humidity and temperature changes.

What does the installation process involve?

Concrete moisture testing is performed first, and an adhesive is selected based on the detected moisture levels. The slab is leveled and cleaned, then engineered hardwood is glued plank-by-plank to the slab. A typical home takes about two days to install.

Is moisture testing actually necessary?

Yes, always. Hydrostatic moisture rises out of concrete daily, and an adhesive not matched to the moisture levels can fail years after installation, leading to delamination, cupping, and replacement costs. Testing prevents this.

Can vinyl flooring also be slab-installed?

Yes. Vinyl SPC, WPC, and Dune are all slab-compatible with a 6mm polyfilm moisture barrier underlayment. Vinyl floats over the slab rather than being glued down, and the barrier manages the same hydrostatic moisture.

Do all five hardwood collections work over concrete?

Yes. Sierra, Westvale, Aurelia, Hudson, and Belmont are all engineered specifically for slab installation with the appropriate adhesive system. This is the foundation of the entire program.

What if my home has a wood subfloor?

Engineered hardwood can also be nail-down installed over a properly prepared wood subfloor. This is less common in our region but fully supported. Glue-down over plywood requires a specific adhesive.

How does climate affect slab installation?

Florida's subtropical climate means concrete maintains a consistent moisture profile year-round, and indoor humidity stays moderate. Engineered hardwood performs reliably across these conditions in a way solid wood cannot.

Will I feel the slab through the floor?

No. Glued-down hardwood and properly installed floating vinyl both insulate well enough that the slab beneath is not felt as cold or hard. The plank thickness (3/8 inch minimum) and finish system handle that.

About Slab-Compatible Flooring

Concrete Slab Compatible Flooring: Best Flooring for Slab Foundations

Homes built on concrete slab foundations require a different approach to flooring. Unlike plywood subfloors, concrete is porous and constantly releases moisture vapor. Choosing the wrong material can lead to warping, rotting, and long-term damage.

Selecting a verified slab-compatible flooring option is essential to protect your investment and ensure long-lasting performance.

The Core Problem: Moisture Resistance

Moisture resistance is the most critical factor when choosing flooring for concrete slabs. Solid hardwood, while visually appealing, is not suitable for direct installation over concrete. It absorbs moisture, leading to swelling and buckling over time.

Instead, opt for materials designed to handle moisture exposure:

  • Porcelain Tile: Fully waterproof and installs directly using thinset mortar.
  • Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP): Completely resistant to moisture and ideal for high-traffic areas.
  • Engineered Hardwood: Designed with cross-layered construction to resist moisture and temperature changes.

Moisture Management and Slab Preparation

Proper preparation is essential before installing any flooring over concrete. A poorly prepared slab will compromise durability and performance.

[Raw Concrete Slab] → [Self-Leveling Compound] → [Moisture Barrier] → [Flooring Installation]

Start by ensuring the slab is clean, dry, and level. Use a self-leveling compound to correct low spots and smooth uneven surfaces.

Install a moisture barrier, such as a 6-mil polyethylene sheet, to block vapor from rising into your flooring. This step is critical for long-term protection.

Top Flooring Options for Concrete

Material Type Moisture Defense Best For Technical Insight
Luxury Vinyl Plank Completely waterproof Basements and mudrooms Durable wear layer handles heavy traffic and pet use.
Engineered Wood High resistance Living rooms and bedrooms Provides real wood appearance with improved stability.
Laminate Flooring Moderate resistance Multi-purpose spaces Scratch-resistant surface; requires a quality vapor barrier.

Expansion Gaps and Transition Trim

Floating floors expand and contract with temperature and humidity changes. Always leave a 1/4-inch expansion gap along walls to prevent buckling.

Avoid installing planks tightly against walls or baseboards. Use transition moldings such as T-moldings or reducers to cover gaps at doorways.

Secure transition pieces to the concrete subfloor using anchors. Do not attach them directly to the flooring, as this restricts natural movement.

Best Practices for Basements and Bathrooms

Avoid carpet in below-grade or high-moisture areas. Concrete slabs retain cold and moisture, making carpet prone to mold growth.

Instead, choose waterproof or moisture-resistant materials such as luxury vinyl, porcelain tile, or engineered hardwood rated for below-grade use.

With proper preparation and the right material selection, your concrete slab flooring can remain stable, durable, and visually appealing for decades.
