Why Gray Floors Have Shifted
The hard, blue-leaning cool grays popularized in the 2010s have already started reading as dated. Today's selection across the program uses balanced, warmer-leaning grays and driftwood tones with stronger natural reference. The Belmont and Dune palettes especially emphasize natural tones that pair with warm furniture and architectural materials.
Gray-Cool Versus Greige
Greige is a gray-beige blend that carries warmer undertones. Gray-cool is more neutral or slightly cool. Both work well in transitional interiors. Greige is more forgiving with warm furniture and lighting; gray-cool reads slightly more contemporary.
Design Pairings
Warm whites, soft cream, pale dusty blues, and warm stone tones all balance a cool-toned floor. Avoid pure cool whites with cool-gray floors, which can make a room feel sterile. Modern coastal, Scandinavian, contemporary, transitional, and modern farmhouse all build beautifully from a gray-cool floor.
Performance and Care
Mid-tone grays with natural grain variation hide wear well. Very smooth uniform grays show scratches more clearly. Stillwater SPC's Sandbar and Hearthwood and Dune's Greyfen and Driftmere are excellent waterproof options for contemporary bathrooms and modern coastal interiors.
